CUT-N-SEWING IN THE WEST
December 16, 2008

Made all the more ironic by his collaboration with British singer Estelle on her "American Boy" single, Kanye West is moving to London in early spring to pursue his burgeoning career in fashion design. According to the Mirror, he is applying to work at the HQ of Louis Vuitton and other European fashion houses.  Mr. West is also planning to unveil his own line, Pastelle in London.  He is reportedly chosen Brit musician Mr. Hudson as his muse and star of Pastelle first ad campaign. The Mirror reports:

Kanye said: "I am going to go and take an internship and just do something that is like completely normal, and just rap at the weekends or something."

Check them at the United Arrows web store.

Cut & Paste 2009
December 15, 2008

Given enough time, everyone can achieve some level of greatness. But what if the clock is running and you’re neck-and-neck with a pack of hungry designers like yourself?

There’s only one way to find out. Cut&Paste has launched its call for competitors, inviting you to participate in what promises to be a fantastic time. If you’re not familiar with Cut&Paste, it’s a live design tournament in 16 cities around the world, culminating in a Global Championship bout in NYC. It’s a blast to watch, but it’s even more fun to participate as a contestant.

This year, Cut&Paste is adding 3D and Motion Design to their existing 2D tournament. I helped create the specs for the Motion Design tournament, and I think it’s going to be a lot of fun. Whether you’re a contestant or a spectator, I’ll see you at the NYC events.

NO PENCIL CHEWING NEEDED
December 15, 2008

Getting students to stay “on task,” as they say, is a constant challenge in the modern school, but one company thinks they have part of the answer. British design company Concentrate has just debuted a new age in the ABCs of reading, writing, and ‘rithmatic… but in this case, that means “already-been-chewed.” As in, their new pencils have been.

The idea is that the pre-chewed pencils will somehow discourage students from chewing on them–because someone’s already been at the wood–and that slight change will magically result in lengthening attention spans, raising grades, and, in all likelihood, curing cancer. Sign me up for a dozen.

Of course, Concentrate never says whether or not the pencils really are pre-chewed, or if it’s artistry only. If they really do retain a posse of gnawers, their plan just might work.

TOTING YOUR MEGA DRIVE
December 15, 2008

Most of us here in the States know SEGA’s classic 16-bit console as the Genesis. But for the rest of the world, the popular video game system carried the Mega Drive moniker. Now, fans of the retro system that made Sonic the Hedgehog a household name can carry their personal belongings in this Mega Drive inspired tote.

The black nylon Mega Drive tote bag was created by SEGA to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the launch of the immensely popular 16-bit console juggernaut. And while the bag may say SEGA, there’s no reason you can’t carry your Nintendo DS Lite or Sony PSP inside. Heck, it’s big enough that you could probably tote around your Xbox 360 inside one of these oversize bags.
.

These rarities are usually only found over at SEGA’s Joypolis shops in Japan, but the guys over at HimeyaShop have managed to score a batch of these for shipment all over the globe. Priced at $55 USD, they actually cost more that it purchasing an actual Mega Drive system, but you definitely couldn’t fit your 360 inside one of those.

A DIFFERENT FAZE OF A STORM
December 15, 2008

The STORM Faze watch features a unique dot-matrix LED display, concealed behind a plastic lens that sort of reminds me of the compound eye of an insect. Or maybe one of those dotty color-blindness tests. Either way, it’s bumpy and cool.

The Faze features a modern stainless steel case and band, and is water resistent to 50 meters (appx. 164 feet). Faze is available in red, slate and silver versions from STORM London for £119.99 (appx. $179 USD)

RECLINING AT ZERO GRAVITY
December 15, 2008

Furniture makers Varier are offering space-age Zen goodness in the form of the limited edition Gravity Balans recliner. Varier claims that the Gravity Balans’ fully reclined position is “probably the closest you will get to zero gravity”, because in it one ends up in a position where the feet are higher than the heart. You guys figure that one out.

The shape of the chair is definitely weird; even Varier says it’s weird. And we all know that weirdly shaped furniture = expensive furniture. Not one to rebel, the Gravity Balans sells for $1,200. Clearly only handsome painters with level 2 stubble who love to nap after painting will be able to afford this.

Each of the 250 Gravity Balans recliners will be signed and numbered by its designer, Peter Opsvik. Buyers can customize their purchase with various colors and accents, and can even choose to have a “kid-friendly” version. I assume that the kid-friendly version can be used to go sledding. While experiencing zero gravity.

NBC GETS COMMON SENSE FROM THE WEST
December 15, 2008

NBC Universal is taking a different approach to rebranding their local news channel websites. According to AdAge, the media conglomerate has hired Common & Kanye West for a series of secret shows for locals only in Los Angeles, New York and Chicago.

The goal is to drive people to their new NBC local news sites such as  nbcnewyork.comnbclosangeles.com andnbcchicago.com and shed the boring image that most local news websites have. Visitors to the site were asked to take a quiz to “prove” they’re locals by answering questions about their city’s landmarks; NBC released 10 tickets for two every day for 10 days. NBCU Senior VP Brian Buchwald states:

“What we’re trying to build is that place people can go to get a feel for what’s going on in this city in real time.”

Considering the recent economy and wave of layoffs at NBC/Universal, Buchwald is hoping and praying that the new image of these local websites can kick start a relationship with new local advertisers and ultimatley bring added revenue to the bottom line. Meanwhile, despite subpar album sales, Common continues to rake in the dough with corporate partnerships such as his recent Microsoft deal.
